About Steven
Steven J. Kustra is an innovative problem solver and counselor who practices in a variety of areas including civil/commercial litigation, business law, municipal law, real estate law, agricultural law, civil rights, and criminal defense.

In addition to his private practice, Steven serves as the Township Attorney for Columbus Township, Michigan, providing advice to Township officials and assisting the Township with legal matters including ordinance violations.
​
No stranger to the courtroom, Steven represents clients in both federal and state courts primarily across the State of Michigan and in the Province of Ontario. Steven's extensive civil/commercial litigation experience includes complex commercial litigation, shareholder disputes, real estate disputes, product liability defense, warranty/consumer law, class action defense, contract disputes, and other types of civil/commercial claims, as well as enforcement of judgments and collections. Steven's clients range from individuals to candidates and public officials, to small businesses, to major automotive manufacturers, which has given Steven litigation experience in most jurisdictions across the United States.

Steven's criminal defense experience is also broad-ranged, including, RICO violations, health care fraud, wire fraud, CSC, controlled substance crimes, official misconduct, and state of Michigan Attorney General investigations. Steven has also participated in conducting internal investigations and audits for both public and private organizations.

Steven has a significant amount of experience in discovery matters, including discovery management and e-discovery, which included managing discovery matters for a large automotive manufacturer for cases across the United States. Due to his experience and proficiency, Steven was tapped by the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan to assist with electronic discovery and litigation technology in a large RICO trial.

Steven also has experience representing and advising clients concerning administrative actions, congressional investigations, political campaigns, and elections.

Outside of the courtroom, Steven aids clients in the formation of businesses, the sale of property, business interests, and assets. He represents and advises clients concerning administrative actions, congressional investigations, political campaigns, elections, and business matters, as well as Michigan Right to Farm Act issues.

Before becoming a principal at Kustra & Bloom PLC, Steven was an associate attorney at Clark Hill PLC and Miller Canfield PLC, where he primarily practiced complex litigation, product liability defense, environment law, and criminal defense. While at Clark Hill PLC he worked as the principal associate on the criminal defense team for two high-ranking individuals related to the Flint Water investigation.
With dual law degrees from the University of Windsor, Ontario, and the University of Detroit Mercy, Steven is licensed to practice in the State of Michigan and the Province of Ontario. He is also admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the Sixth and Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, the Federal District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan, and the Federal District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
While in law school, Steven worked as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Edward A. Servitto of the Macomb County Circuit Court, and as an intern at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law's Veterans Law Clinic. In undergraduate studies, Steven interend with the Department of Defense, Undersecretary for Policy, Human Capital section, in Washington D.C.

Before becoming a lawyer, Steven proudly served in the United States Army, Military Police Corps and was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. As a result of injuries sustained in combat, Steven was awarded the Purple Heart medal and medically retired. In addition to his law practice, Steven is an avid supporter of veteran causes and is involved with a number of veteran-related organizations and initiatives.

Steven is an amateur farmer and fledgling homesteader, and is associated with the Michigan Small Farms Council.
